How Palestinian Leaders 'Guarantee' Freedom of Expression

by Khaled Abu Toameh • July 29, 2019 at 5:00 am

The [Palestinian Committee for Supporting Journalists] revealed that there has been a "marked increase in violations against journalists by the Palestinian security forces in recent months" and said that it has documented more than 104 trespasses since the beginning of 2019.

Thus far, however, the new Palestinian government has dashed these hopes for basic journalistic freedom.

The continued crackdown on public freedoms under the Palestinian Authority means one of two things -- both of which are bad news: either the prime minister has no real control over the Palestinian security forces, or he truly cares nothing about freedom of expression and unimpeded journalistic jurisdiction. Neither scenario bodes well for the future of human rights for Palestinians.

During a meeting with a Human Rights Watch (HRW) delegation last week, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh promised that no Palestinian will be arrested or prosecuted for exercising his or her freedom of expression.

"Freedom of expression is a sacred right for every citizen," Shtayyeh was quoted as saying. "The government has guaranteed citizens the right to express their opinion through constructive criticism, whether in terms of social media or websites."

Only one day before Shtayyeh assured the HRW delegation that his government would not crack down on Palestinians for expressing their views, however, Palestinian security forces in the West Bank arrested journalist and political activist Thaer al-Fakhoury, 30, for allegedly "vilifying the public authority."

Why U.S. Special Forces Need to Remain Abroad

by Lawrence A. Franklin • July 29, 2019 at 4:00 am

What skeptics need to understand is that the Green Berets in Africa -- as all U.S. troops are doing in other places and other contexts -- are performing a crucial service to U.S. interests. They are helping America maintain a small footprint in states at peril of losing the battle against jihad and its totalitarian ideology, or other threats, while often assisting local militaries transform from corrupt, domestic bullies to national protectors of the people.

The number of American soldiers deployed in Africa has grown to approximately 6,000, a quarter of which belong to Special Forces units. About two-thirds are stationed at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti. Their mission is to support the Organization of African Union's mission to suppress the al Qaeda affiliate, al-Shabaab. American Green Berets are currently gripped in helping dozens of African countries in a low-key but desperate struggle to prevent a vast swath of the world's poorly governed spaces from falling to Islamist terrorists. The U.S. Special Operations Africa Command's 3rd Special Forces Group (3rd SFG) has been operating in 33 such countries, training and equipping their local armies to enable them to combat threats to state sovereignty posed by al Qaeda and ISIS. The same goal was the impetus behind the establishment of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) in 2007.

An Increasingly Dangerous Stand-off between Civilizations

by Denis MacEoin • July 28, 2019 at 5:00 am

Not all people who worry about a replacement of civilizations are necessarily violent or even incorrect. They appear to be frightened folk, sent over the edge by matters they may feel beyond control. In Europe and the United States, they have witnessed wave upon wave of attacks by individuals and groups openly espousing violence in the name of religion. They seem to fear that their own governments are doing too little to protect them and their families from future attacks.

"What unites these groups ideologically is a belief that Europe is facing a 'great replacement' by Muslim and African immigrants. And they want something done about it." — Marion MacGregor, "The push from Europe's young new right", Infomigrants.net; May 5, 2018.

Political correctness, often an extreme form of denial of reality, has made it increasingly hard for even the most reasonable and careful of thinkers to say anything critical about Islam...efforts to block fair criticism of aspects of Islam can become unjust forms of censorship.

On Easter Sunday, 21 April 2019, around 253 innocent people, including many children, were slaughtered during attacks on churches and three hotels in Sri Lanka, the largest death toll in an attack since the nearly 3,000 on September 11, 2001. The number of deaths is not always a guide to the impact of a tragedy. One of the most recent tragedies had a high, but far from record-making, toll of fatalities. First, and as a basis for comparison, it is worth noting that the November 2015 Islamic State attacks in Paris slaughtered 90 people in the Bataclan Theatre and more elsewhere in the city, for a total of 130 deaths. The Islamist truck attack on a single stretch of road in Nice on 14 July 2016 took no fewer than 86 lives. On Easter Sunday, 21 April 2019, around 253 innocent people, including many children, were slaughtered during radical Muslim attacks on churches and three hotels in Sri Lanka, the largest death toll since the nearly 3,000 on September 11, 2001.

How Tehran Tries to Drown the Fish

by Amir Taheri • July 28, 2019 at 4:00 am

A tougher profile, attacks on tankers and other soft targets, gesticulations by Hezbollah and Hamas, and more hostages are one aspect of the scheme that Tehran is currently working on. The other is a desperate attempt at appearing ready to enter into "constructive talks". That yarn is marketed by Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is still retained to play Foreign Minister in Western forums and TV studios.

In New York, Zarif added the promise of addressing another demand, that the so-called "nuke deal" be rehashed to make limits on Iran's nuclear program permanent rather than limited to 10, 15 or 25 years. That could be done, at least in part, by Tehran signing the Additional Protocols of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), something that the Islamic Republic had promised to do during Obama's presidency but didn't.

Trump's sanctions, which cost the US nothing, are placing the Islamic Republic under a degree of pressure it has never known. This is why Khamenei, his huffing-and-puffing notwithstanding, is ready to do what he is told, provided he can save a minimum of face. His chief aim at present is to survive the rough patch created for him by Trump. That could be done if he is allowed to sell even a million barrels of oil a day to finance his pet projects and surrogates at home and abroad. Will Trump be tempted to declare victory and let the Islamic Republic off the hook at a time it is reeling under pressure?

The US and its closest allies will have to decide whether to let the Islamic Republic off the hook yet again, and, as always, in exchange for partial and largely cosmetic concessions.

President Donald Trump's sanctions on Iran, which cost the US nothing, are placing the Islamic Republic under a degree of pressure it has never known. Is the Islamic Republic collecting fresh "assets" with which to enter into a possible dialogue with the American "Great Satan"? The pattern of news related to Iran in the past few weeks may make "yes" a plausible answer. Tehran has already carried out a series of attacks on oil tankers in Fujairah and close to the Iranian Jask Peninsula. Its surrogates in Iraq have fired a number of rockets at targets connected with the US presence in that country. Tehran's Yemeni surrogates, the Houthi militia, have fired a number of missiles to raise the tension without affecting the overall military situation. Last week the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized two British-flagged oil tankers, releasing one after a demonstration of force coupled with a stern warning.

Boris Johnson Reviving Britain's Standing on the World Stage

by Con Coughlin • July 27, 2019 at 5:00 am

Mr Johnson's determination to help Britain reclaim its status as a leading world power after the drift of the May years is reflected in the stature of his appointments, especially regarding Britain's engagement with the outside world.

In one of Mrs May's last acts as prime minister, Britain declined an offer of American military support to protect British shipping in the Gulf, resulting in Iran's Revolutionary Guard hijacking a British-registered oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and holding it captive in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Thus, with politicians of this calibre occupying key positions in the new British government, Mr Johnson now has a golden opportunity to revive Britain's standing on the world stage, one where the close relationship between Washington and London will be one of the pillars of Britain's dynamic new approach.

The appointment of Boris Johnson as Britain's new prime minister offers the serious prospect of a radical improvement in the bilateral ties between Washington and London. Pictured: Johnson enters Number 10 Downing Street on July 24, 2019, his first day in office as prime minister. (Photo by Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images)

The appointment of Boris Johnson as Britain's new prime minister offers the serious prospect of a radical improvement in the bilateral ties between Washington and London following the froideur [chill] that came to define the transatlantic relationship under the outgoing prime minister, Theresa May.

While, in public, Mrs May offered loyal pledges of support to Donald Trump, and professed to enjoy a warm personal relationship with the American president, the reality was that the personal chemistry between the two leaders was often awkward, with Mrs May often failing to grasp Mr Trump's radical approach to global affairs.

Open Letter to The New Yorker Exposes False Allegations

by Alan M. Dershowitz • July 27, 2019 at 4:00 am

You appear determined to concoct a false narrative of my life....To support your false narrative, you began your negative "research"... by sourcing a Holocaust denial site that circulates false stories about prominent Jews, including me. You then interviewed my enemies, my critics, dissenting students and especially anti-Israel and, in some cases anti-Semitic, zealots.... The original reporting... did not include interviews with longtime friends and associates... You agreed to speak to a handful of such people only at the last minute, after I complained to the editor. But even then when some people called you, you told them the story was closed.

It is undisputed...that neither Al nor Tipper Gore ever met Jeffrey Epstein or were ever on his island. The Accuser's description is a complete and total fabrication and/or fantasy. I asked her attorney David Boies to call his former client Al Gore to check on whether she was lying about the Gores. He refused to do so....Secret Service records establish that Bill Clinton was never on Jeffrey Epstein's island. President Clinton has confirmed this fact.

I have provided The New Yorker with transcripts of recordings in which David Boies acknowledges that it would have been "impossible" for me to have been in the places Roberts claims to have met me and that Roberts is "wrong... simply wrong," in accusing me. The actual tapes were played for Bruck.

Like the first Accuser, she [the Second Accuser] only began to accuse me after she met David Boies. There is an insidious pattern here. The women first indicate they never had sex with me; then they meet Boies. Then they suddenly "remember" they had sex with me. Boies must know that both Accusers cannot be believed and that they made up the stories about me in the hope of getting money (which they got). Yet, he submitted their false affidavits, vouching for their credibility without disclosing to the courts their [both women's] documented history of lying about prominent people.

The New Yorker must know that there is absolutely, categorically, no evidence that I was ever in the same place as my Accusers or that I had any sexual contact with them. The New Yorker must also know that in addition to the absence of any evidence against me, there is overwhelming indisputable evidence that I could not and did not commit the acts of which I am accused.

In all three instances, my false Accusers have refused to make their accusations to the media on the record. They have made them only in court papers, hiding behind the litigation privilege, which precludes defamation suits for false statements. This is a tactic developed and employed by David Boies to prevent any legal accountability for false accusations. The New Yorker must publish the fact that my accusers have refused to go on the record (or presumably off the record) with The New Yorker or any other publication in accusing me. If it repeats these false accusations, without confronting the accusers directly, The New Yorker will have done precisely what judges and others have condemned: namely using the judicial process as both a sword and a shield for false accusations.

Alan Dershowitz: "The New Yorker must know that there is absolutely, categorically, no evidence that I was ever in the same place as my Accusers or that I had any sexual contact with them. The New Yorker must also know that in addition to the absence of any evidence against me, there is overwhelming indisputable evidence that I could not and did not commit the acts of which I am accused." (Photo:Getty Images)

As I have previously written, The New Yorker has commissioned a hit piece that seems calculated to silence my voice on President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israel.

Here below is a letter I sent to the editor, the writer and the fact checkers. I have received only a formal response assuring me that the article will be fair. I replied that this will be up to the readers and the courts to judge.
